Finishing Touch to Custom Cabinets with Hardware

Cabinet Hardware

The smallest details can make a huge difference.  When cabinet doors are the same exact material, color and design a knob or handle makes it different.  Custom cabinets rely on small details to make it stand out from other designs.  Complete the look by choosing a knob or handle for your cabinet.

Knobs are easier to install than handles.  Installation involves a single attachment point:  one hole with one screw which is one less hole than handles.  Depending on how the cabinet opens, it’s mostly located in lower left or right hand corner.  Unlike handles, there are many selections of styles and finishes to choose from (or to make from scratch) with more design space to work with.   It is elegant, classic and simple.

Handles are easier to operate than knobs.  You can place your hand inside it and pull the cabinet towards you with minimal effort.  Handle designs give you the freedom to make it yours.  Knobs are usually one way–circular–while handles can be straight or curvy.  Handles can also be long, short, simple or detailed.  It’s contemporary and modern.

Consider the following when making a knob or handle decision:

  1. Consider grip size.  Feel the space in-between the knob or handle and the cabinet material.  Make sure it can be opened with comfort.  Bring a family member with large hands in to test it out and make the final decision.
  2. Look at the distance between the attachment points to the edge.  Cabinets should be low enough for you to reach but not low enough that it messes up the design.
  3. Think about kitchen or bathroom decor.  The knob or handle should complement the theme of the room.  Stainless steel appliances, for example, will look great with a metal knob/handle or with a nickel finish.

Details are important in custom cabinet design.  Every decision you make should be in the final product.  Ignoring knobs or handles in custom cabinet design makes the whole product incomplete.  Make it completely yours and get involved in the decision-making of cabinet knobs and handles.  For more information on knobs, handles and cabinets, contact us.
