Frequently Asked Questions

I can’t come visit your showroom in Indiana. How can I buy from you without seeing your products?

Not being able to visit our showroom and manufacturing facility is by no means a show stopper. We’ve been doing this long enough to understand what’s needed for a successful installation and can communicate with you via e-mail, phone and video without a problem. When it comes to getting actual hard samples in your hands, it’s just a matter of us using FED EX or UPS to get things to your door. Ultimately, we’ll probably want to do a field measurement before we begin crafting your cabinets, but short of that, we can cover everything else with today’s technology.

Chances are we have a kitchen installed in your area and our customers are generally very happy to have you come see their cabinets. We can also give you a list of references that can help you to verify you’re choosing a reputable and capable company.

How are your cabinets constructed?

Our craftsmanship is second to none. We have married modern technology with old world craftsmanship. Many tasks long ago delegated to machines of mass production are still done by hand at Cabinets By Graber. We build our cabinets the old-fashioned way, one at a time, using construction methods that date back many centuries like dovetail construction and tongue and groove joinery. Our skilled craftsmen have successfully integrated these time-honored methods with modern CNC milling equipment and computer aided design. We use all wood materials including veneer core plywood for the box construction.

When is it appropriate to invest in a certified designer?

This is really a matter of personal preference and the scope of your project. Cabinets by Graber offers a complimentary design service from our team of designers. Our designers have decades of custom cabinetry design experience and do a great job designing to your tastes. If you can provide us with a few simple measurements and photos, we can provide you with a beautiful initial design.

If you’re considering the help of a certified kitchen and bath designer, let us just say we think they’re worth their weight in gold. We’ve worked with some amazing designers over the years and are generally very impressed with their work. Because they’re local, they’ll be able to sit down with you at your home and discuss in detail every aspect of your project such as colors, flooring, layout, etc.

It truly is up to you! One thing to keep in mind however is to verify that your designer will allow you to buy from any manufacturer, not just a particular one or two he/she may represent.

How can I make my cabinets more environmentally friendly?

We offer a variety of environmentally friendly choices such as Lyptus wood and formaldehyde-free glue. Please ask your sales associate or designer about these products. If you research something that you would like for us to use we will be happy to explore your products as well.

I need help knowing which walls to move. Can you help with this?

We can certainly make recommendations in terms of layout and functionality as it relates to moving walls, but you will need to consult with a general contractor to study the feasibility of such changes to your home. The biggest determination will be whether or not those walls are load bearing and what options might exist if they are. Please contact a general contractor.

Do you service the entire United States?

We sure do. Your specific location won’t be an issue.

How do you ship your cabinets?

Let’s just say we’re probably going overboard with the protection we provide to the cabinets during shipment, but we like it that way. We use packing materials specifically designed to protect wood products in transit and we use our own trucks and drivers to bring them to you. We don’t want your cabinets being handled by a commercial carrier who will transfer them multiple times or otherwise handle them in a manner that puts them at risk for damage. Your cabinets are in our care until we leave them with you.

Who installs the cabinets?

In most cases, your general contractor or builder will have someone for this, but we’re certainly happy to help you find someone too. If you’re more than 2-3 hours from us, it’s just not economical for you or for us if we do the installation. Rest assured, we’ve done all of the work in advance, so it would be awful hard to screw up the installation. We literally set up your entire project in our facility and ship it in a manner that’s most conducive for a fast and painless installation.

Who is responsible for measuring my project?

In short, we are. Prior to crafting your cabinets, a representative from our company or one of our partners will arrive at your home for exact measurements.

When can I expect my cabinets?

From the date of your order, we’ll typically have the cabinets to your home in 6-12 weeks. The size and scope of your project plays a role in production time, as does the time of year and backlog of other projects. When you’re ready to order, we’ll be able to give you a very good estimate and will work hard to meet your deadlines.

What do I need to do to prepare for my field measurement?

The most important criteria for your cabinet measure is to have your final framing configuration in place. We will work with your contractor to obtain information such as drywall thickness, final floor thickness and casing and baseboard width and thickness. This allows us to make sure your cabinets fit perfectly when they arrive at your home. Do not wait until your drywall is in place to order your cabinets. If you’re remodeling and not making changes to framing or drywall, you’re not likely to need to do anything.

Can you do my countertops too?

We are a dealer of granite and Silestone and can offer a full line of choices for clients located relatively close to our facility (Grabill, IN). For those located outside of our area, which we realize is going to be many of you, it’s generally more economical and just flat out easier to use someone in your local area. We make our own wood tops and ship them with your cabinets, so we can easily accommodate anyone in the United States with our wood tops.

Does cherry change color over the years?

A lighter cherry will darken over time. A darker wood will evolve into a richer color not necessarily a darker color.

Do you work on commercial projects?

Absolutely! We have furnished a 200 room boutique hotel  in Chicago, a grand lobby for a gourmet chocolate shop, and a beautiful optical shop just to name a few. We provide custom cabinetry for any type of commercial application.

How do I care for the finish on my cabinetry?

The proper care of your fine wood work is a very simple and carefree process. The coatings are of the finest quality and durability and require very simple care methods.

To clean any surface you need only to use a damp, soft cloth with warm water and a mild detergent. Wipe the surface gently and when finished cleaning wipe dry with a soft cloth. Avoid using cleaners with ammonia, bleaches and abrasives. If you wish to polish your cabinets, use a high quality non-wax furniture polish.

Conversion varnish is the most commonly used finish in the high end furniture and custom cabinet market. When properly applied and cared for the beauty of your cabinetry’s finish will be enjoyed for many generations. Conversion Varnish has excellent resistance to food, beverages, and common household chemicals. However, to maintain the beautiful appearance a few guidelines must be followed:

  • Do not place damp newsprint or plastic bags on the surface as inks and dye may penetrate the finish when moist
  • Limit exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible
  • Avoid excessive waxing as the can cause the moisture from a beverage can or glass to leave a milky white ring on the surface of the wood

We provide you with a touch up kit for any future scratches or nicks. We also give you a bottle of polish to help you keep your cabinets looking their best.
