Custom cabinetry plays a vital role in many rooms of the home. When designing new custom cabinets there is a high level of flexibility in planning their storage and organizational roles. Functional cabinetry planning emphasizes organization and efficiency for storage in the kitchen, bathroom, dining room, office and entertainment areas. Cabinet designs vary with the size, location and organizational requirements of each project.

Cabinets are often the most visible part of a room, especially the kitchen where they represent the overall design motif. Custom cabinetry built to your exact specifications of height, width, depth and detail represent your own unique taste and style. This includes selection of wood species, color, finish and door details. From that base you add the finer details of and custom fitted storage options according to you individual needs and desires.

Functional custom cabinetry in the kitchen should focus on efficiency regarding the storage and working areas. Special focus is placed around the refrigerator, stove and sink areas (see our earlier post on the kitchen work triangle). Functional space design emphasizes the ease and efficiency of daily functions performed around specific work stations.

There are many ideas for functional storage options. Here are some popular suggestions:

  •      Cabinets above the fridge with vertical organizing slots make storage and retrieval easy and keep clutter to a minimum.
  •      Vertical slots for storing and organizing dishes, pots and pans avoids time wasted looking through crowded cabinets.
  •      Organized drawers for kitchen cutlery will keep it uncluttered and make it faster to find what you want.
  •      Supported roll-outs allow organization and easy access to frequently used cooking utensils and equipment. Other roll-outs are used as cupboards for cooking ingredients and spices.
  •      Cookbooks are always close at hand when stored in shelves installed in an island.
  •      Cubbies at the base of overhanging cabinets allow easy access to frequently used plates, cups and bowls.
  •      Pullout drawers for trash and recycle bins to keeps them neat and out of sight.
  •      A built in wine rack adds an artistic touch to island or cupboard spaces while displaying your collection of fine wines.
  •      Drawer functionality can be maximized by replacing solid drawers with mesh baskets. These are perfect for storing dry baking goods, fruits and vegetables.
  •      Storage areas for kitchen appliances on counters can be set off behind cabinet doors.

In any new home or renovation project, cabinets are a major part of the design. The opportunity to plan for maximum functionality is an unique opportunity to design your home’s storage to suit your individual taste and lifestyle. It’s up to you to decide your own list of how you want to organize your house. Cabinets by Graber works with you and your designer to build the long lasting and original cabinets that will give you the storage solutions you need and the beauty you desire, please feel free to contact us or give us a call at 800-478-9488

Installing a custom kitchen island can transform your kitchen.  It could give you more space to work with and more room to store or display various items.  Custom kitchen islands can also turn your kitchen into a more social place where people have an easier time gathering around to eat, work and chat.

However, in order to get the most out of your custom kitchen island, you need to make sure you won’t have the following problems:

1) Impeded movement

Depending on the size of your kitchen and the location of major appliances, your kitchen island could either fit naturally with the room or become an impediment to moving efficiently between the sink, stove, and fridge.  You should be able to circulate around the island naturally and not feel as if it’s making your kitchen incredibly cramped or blocking your ability to move smoothly from one key point in the kitchen to another.  Also, make sure that the island doesn’t prevent you from using various appliances; for instance, if the dishwasher door bangs into the island every time you’re trying to load dishes, that’s a problem.

2) Inefficient use of space

In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the kitchen island should also have functionality.  You should have enough lighting to work easily on the counter space, which ideally will be made of a material that doesn’t scratch or damage easily in other ways.  Furthermore, if you need more space, the island could have built-in cabinets and drawers.  When designing and installing your island, consider what you could use it for and whether or not you’re making the best use of the extra space it gives you.

3) The island is an eyesore

No part of the kitchen should be designed independently of any other part.  Everything in your kitchen needs to come together to form some kind of harmonious whole.  Even minor details, like the knobs on cabinet doors, stand out.  When designing your island, consider how the colors, materials, and other design elements will fit in with the rest of your kitchen.

For further advice and assistance on installing a kitchen island, contact us.  We’ll make sure your kitchen island is beautiful and functional, free of mistakes that would necessitate additional renovations.

If your kitchen countertops are outdated, dingy, or damaged you may be considering replacing them. As you know, there are many options available to consider when looking for replacement countertops; however, one option you may not have considered is butcher block countertops. Butcher block countertops are countertops that are made out of assembled strips of wood; generally, sugar maple wood is the most commonly used type of wood. These countertops are referred to as butcher blocks because they were commonly found in butcher shops. These countertops provide many benefits over other countertop options; here are just a few of the many benefits they provide.

They Are Environmentally Friendly

Butcher block countertops are possibly the most environmentally friendly countertop option. This is due to the fact that they are generally made out of reclaimed would rather than new materials. Thusly, butcher block countertops are a great option for the environmentally conscious homeowner who want to lessen their impact on the earth.

An Aesthetically Pleasing Option

Many people consider butcher block counter tops to be the most beautiful countertop option. Depending on the wood they are made out of, butcher block countertops have a warmer and more inviting appearance than stone and metal countertops. They can add a more warm and rustic appearance to any kitchen.

Doubles as a Cutting board

With butcher block countertops you will never need a cutting board again, as they make a great cutting surface. Unlike other countertops, butcher block countertops are sturdy and can endure the intense cutting and chopping of cooking.

For the trendy and environmentally friendly homeowner, butcher block countertops make a great replacement countertop option. If you would like to find out more about the benefits of butcher block countertops, contact us. We can provide you with information about this great countertop option.

A kitchen is more than just a place to prepare meals and dine together. It is also a place to gather together, and enjoy a casual conversation over dinner. Kitchens are often the nerve center of the home, where family and friends congregate and talk while munching on snacks.

While designing your kitchen, it is important to keep the family’s needs in mind so that the design matches their style of living. There are many details involved in kitchen design to ensure it will be attractive, useful, comfortable and efficient.

Layout

The foundation of a kitchen is the layout, which should be compatible with its planned functions. A gourmet kitchen may have a U-shape or similar layout for maximum efficiency, or a G-shape to discourage through traffic. A social kitchen may be an L-style, or an open style where it is merged with another room.

Functionality

The main functional design should take the working triangle into consideration. The refrigerator, stove and sink should all be close enough to one another to allow frequent access while cooking. Prep and storage areas should be placed conveniently as well, such a locating a counter top near the refrigerator.

Cabinetry

Cabinets are the most visible part of a kitchen, and cabinets that are custom designed for that kitchen will make it unique. Cabinet design should be considered carefully, since the cabinets are the foundation of the kitchen’s style. Whether your style is contemporary, old world, simple, antique or anything else, it will be showcased by your cabinets.

Solid hardwood construction, properly cared for, will bring beauty and utility for generations to come. There are also many features that customize your cabinets. Glass-front cabinets are popular today, as are built in organizing features. There are many choices in pulls, knobs and hinges to accent your cabinets.

Countertops

Preparation surfaces require rugged materials to stand up to the abuse they will receive without showing scratches and dents. Granite, quartz, marble or other stone surfaces provide the rugged beauty that is ideal for this application.

Appliances

The workhorses of the kitchen should combine robust functionality with style for a beautiful and practical kitchen.

Flooring

Durability, appearance and cleaning are the main considerations with kitchen flooring. Ceramic tiles are very durable and beautiful. They come in many shapes, sizes and colors that can be arranged in unique designs and mosaics. Slate comes in a variety of rustic colors and is very difficult to damage or stain. Hardwood is beautiful and durable, but not as resistant to stains and damage as other materials. Laminate flooring can mimic the appearance hardwood while being more durable.

However you design your kitchen, your cabinet’s design should unite all the elements into a beautiful and fully functional whole. The craftsmen at Cabinets by Graber have been custom building cabinets for more than 30 years. We will work directly with you and your designer to equip your kitchen with the finest cabinets. Stained cabinets and older cabinets don’t mix. They’re the same color, but you can tell its two different variations fighting for control in your kitchen. End the war peacefully by tinting stained cabinets to match the old ones. It’s not about matching the tint of wood; it’s about matching the grain, gloss, shape, detail and wood type.

Stained cabinets have to be tested first; this is done to see how the wood reacts to being stained. Test it on extra pieces of wood (not the cabinet), and test it several times so you have an idea of what the stain will do to the wood. Before testing make sure the wood tested is the same type of wood the cabinet is made from. Make sure that the wood is sanded down with sandpaper to match the surface of the cabinet door. Another way to test is to go to a paint store and let them test it out for you. Paint stores will tell you what stain matches the wood best. The purpose of staining is to bring out the wood grain and make it look natural.

Get the exact match of stain along with one shade lighter and one shade darker. All shades must be in the same color range. A second round of testing begins with using a test sample (pieces of wood). Grab a piece and use the stain that matched the best to brush on the sample. Rub it off after a minute and compare the results with the rest of the cabinets. Mix a light shade if the results are too dark. Mix a dark shade if the results are too light. When the stain matches the rest of the kitchen cabinets, use the result to paint on the cabinet door. Finish the process by using a clear topcoat; this seals in the shade permanently. Follow the instructions on how much to use and how long to wait between coats.

Another way to tint stained cabinets is to wipe off the wax and grease with water and TSP. After drying sand it down and wipe dust off. Use a tinted polyurethane varnish for darkening the cabinets until the right shade comes. To lighten the shade, use paint remover several times and scrape off as much of the finish as possible. If possible you may have to chlorine bleach. Make sure the home is fully ventilated as removing paint releases fumes. Then use the tinted polyurethane varnish to start darkening until the right shade comes.

As you can see it’s not a hard process. Matching stained cabinets to the rest of the decor is possible if you’re willing to work at it. You can also contact us for our professional touch on stained cabinets as well as more information about stained cabinets and our company. We have experience in tinting stained cabinets and can assist in any way.

If you have old unsightly radiator covers, you are probably looking for a way to dress them up a bit. What better way than to use wooden radiator covers to help them blend with the other furniture in your room? Best of all, these covers can provide a bit of safety for little ones, since you won’t have to worry about them bumping their heads on the corners or being burned while touching them.

In cases of very long radiators, you can make them functional as well as stylish by turning them into a bench. Simply add a cushioned top to the radiator cover, and you can use it as additional seating whenever you have company over.

A radiator cover can also be used to increase your storage. That’s because some of them have shelves on either side of them that can be used for books, what knots, DVDs or a number of other things. When paired with a cover that appears to have doors on the front of it, these shelves will help give the appearance of a freestanding bookshelf or cabinet rather than an unsightly radiator.

If your radiator is in an especially awkward spot, take advantage of the versatility of wooden covers to create a makeshift entertainment center for your living room. Create a shelf over the top of your radiator for placing a television on, and then build shelves next to it for holding game systems, DVD players or other items on.

Use a radiator cover to turn this otherwise unsightly object into the focal point for your room. Do this by choosing a cover that somewhat resembles a fireplace grate, and then hanging a beautiful framed print or mirror over the top of it. Your radiator cover could also contain unique artwork on it as well.

Add a bit of nostalgia to your room by having your radiator cover designed to resemble an old-fashioned Victoria or bathroom cabinet. It could even come complete with a faux marble countertop or glass knobs to further enhance the look of it.

These are only a few ideas for wooden radiator covers, but we’re sure you can come up with dozens more. To enhance your décor by installing these covers, contact us for an estimate today.

The kitchen used to be a separate room where the host of a party would prepare food in private behind four walls and a revolving door. Eventually, the kitchen started becoming a gathering place where guests during dinner parties would intermingle and share in the preparation of food and drink. Open kitchen designs later became the interior design alternative to those who preferred consolidating a more social atmosphere within the confines of preparing and tasting food.

When you think about it, tasting food while socializing truly does create a warmer atmosphere during a dinner party. Take a look at common open kitchen designs and how they can connect to rooms so the kitchen stays social even when there’s no guests directly in the space.

Using Kitchen Islands

The kitchen island has become a standard part of kitchens within the last 20 years and integrates well with an open kitchen design. That’s because it can essentially work like a bar, including placing stools or chairs around the island for visiting while the host creates a meal. Best of all, it’s also a place where food can be passed around for tasting or preparing.

Some people use more than one kitchen island in open kitchens. This provides a chance for all guests to congregate in the area, even if a guest room might be viewable from the kitchen.

Connecting Kitchens with a Dining Area

Houses from earlier eras almost always had a barrier between the kitchen and dining area. That could also lead to accidents when the host carried trays of food through a revolving kitchen door. An open kitchen design can have the dining area merely steps away from the kitchen rather than separated. This design started turning up in homes within the last several decades.

In order to create more space for guests to mingle near the kitchen area, make sure your dining tables and chairs are easy to move out of the way temporarily.

More Windows Around the Kitchen

Having a panorama of windows around a kitchen with a stunning view can make an open kitchen design feel even more open. It also allows natural light to come in so cabinetry details can stand out and electricity can be saved while preparing food (at least in the daytime). Add some light and airy cabinetry to this design, and it creates a fresh and dynamic space for socializing alongside gastronomy.

Placing Everything on One Wall

An open kitchen with everything on one wall is also a trendy way to make the space connect with several open rooms in your house. Placing cabinetry and kitchen appliances one one side wall can extend the kitchen space dozens of feet while connecting to a dining area or even the living room. In many cases, open kitchen designs like this can mean using the same cabinetry design throughout several open rooms.

If you want an open kitchen design with luxury cabinetry, you’re going to need a designer that can give you the very best materials. Cabinets by Graber is there for you to provide luxury cabinetry that stands alone from anything else. We have access to many different wood species from around the world, allowing over 80 different finishes you can use. We’ll then custom design the cabinetry you want for your open kitchen.

Modern homeowners love the look of a contemporary design kitchen, yet achieving just the right balance between form and function can be challenging.

So how can you achieve a gorgeous contemporary design in your kitchen?

Door Style

For a modern, contemporary design look, less is more when it comes to door style.  The goal is strong, clean lines, so modern kitchens tend to have very minimalist doors.  Great examples of our door styles with a modern feel are Broadway, Chandler, Fifth Avenue, and Metro.  Each of these styles fits in perfectly with a modern kitchen atmosphere.

Wood Choice

Most often, darker wood species are chosen for kitchens with a contemporary flare, such as walnut and mahogany.  However, a modern kitchen with an eco-friendly vibe is also a great place for bamboo cabinets, or even a super-sleek, all-white look.

Hardware

Many homeowners seeking a contemporary look are moving towards finger pulls, instead of more traditional decorative pulls.  Finger pulls are cut into the actual lip of the door, preserving a sleek look and reducing unnecessary decorative hardware.

Integrated, Enclosed Appliances

Integrated appliances that blend into the surrounding cabinets are becoming extremely popular in modern kitchens.  They maintain the clean lines of the cabinets by appearing to simply be part of them, making your kitchen look sleeker, cleaner, and more organized.

Great Islands

One way to streamline your modern kitchen is with a large, multi-purpose island.  An island large enough to accommodate both prep work and dining may eliminate the need for a kitchen table, reducing the clutter in your kitchen and making the work space the focal point of the room.
