The Trendy Look of Butcher Block Countertops

Butcher Block Countertop

If your remodeling plans include a new kitchen, try using butcher block countertops. The rustic look of wood countertops, and especially butcher block countertop, is a design trend that shows no signs of easing up. There are quite a few reasons why using butcher block makes a lot of sense.

Many of today’s butcher blocks are made with varnished surfaces which make for easy care and maintenance. If you remember to use a plastic or glass cutting board for chopping vegetables or cutting meat, simple dish soap and water will make clean-up a breeze. If you cut directly on the top, use a solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water to disinfect the surface after use. Make your solution ahead and keep it handy in a spray bottle.

If your butcher block counter is not varnished, it will need a little extra care every few months or when it starts to look dull. Most experts suggest using mineral oil since it is food safe. You can easily find it in the drugstore with the laxatives (which is the medicinal use for mineral oil). Simply apply the oil, rubbing it with the grain. Let it sit overnight, then wipe excess oil with a dry cloth. Your block will shine like new.

Butcher blocks were originally chunks of maple tree trunks that butchers used to cut meat. These days many different wood species such as oak, cherry, or walnut can be used to contrast or coordinate with wood cabinets or floors, or granite countertops. The design possibilities are endless.

Instead of using the butcher block tops throughout the kitchen, try using it on an island, or just in one area of the counter used for food prep. If you use it near a sink, it may darken with the additional water exposure. But if it’s unfinished, you can always sand it with a fine sandpaper and then re-oil it for a like-new finish. That’s also the way to remove small scratches or stains.
