Custom Cabinet Makers

The line between semi custom and custom cabinetry is being blurred. It’s easy to be misled into thinking semi custom cabinets are the same as custom cabinets because you can “customize” by upgrading to various options on semi custom lines. It would lead you to believe that you now have a custom cabinet. That is not the case. Semi custom cabinets can only be made to fit certain design and size parameters. They are typically ordered from a catalog of predetermined sizes and styles. You typically have to pay extra once you stray from the “standards.”

4 Things to Consider When Purchasing Custom Cabinets

Designing and purchasing new custom built cabinets is an exciting experience that will enhance the feel of your home while also expressing your personal style and taste. When choosing a custom cabinet maker, there are several things to consider in order to guarantee the quality, durability, and value of your cabinets for years to come.

Lumber selection

Using high grade, premium lumber is an essential component to the construction and overall quality of your cabinets. In the manufacturing of your cabinets, all internal and external lumber used should be consistent in both grain pattern and color. Whether you are choosing softwood, hardwood, or an exotic wood, it is important to understand the distinctions and characteristics specific to each type of wood. This will be important to decide whether paint, stain, or distressing techniques fit into your overall design.

Construction Methods

Using a cabinet manufacturer with a reputation for high quality craftsmanship is important step to help ensure proper construction. Custom built cabinets are typically handcrafted using traditional construction techniques. Mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail construction, and properly assembled foundations enhance the strength and durability of your cabinets. Veneer core plywood is generally used when constructing cabinet frame boxes. Typically ½” VC plywood is used on the sides and ¼” on the back. It is recommended that internal cabinet shelving should be ¾” thick VC plywood. Dovetail construction is used for assembly on all four corners of the cabinet drawer boxes. These should fit snugly and be smooth to the touch.

Finishes

Typically the focal point of your design, there are many finishing options today that will enhance the appearance and style of your cabinets. The goal of finishing is to highlight the specific characteristics unique to your section of wood. From paint and stain, to a wide variety of distressing techniques, the combination of finishes is nearly unlimited. The finish on your cabinetry should also include a catalyzed conversion varnish. This is a clear coat that protects paint or stain finishes and makes the cabinetry moisture resistant.

Accessories

Accentuating your cabinet doors and drawers with accessories and fixtures complements both the look and style of your custom cabinets. Used for functionality as well as appearance, accessories are an integral part of the design and usage of your cabinets. There are many options available from modern and classic to ornamental and decorative. Typically fixtures and accessories are pre-manufactured; however, custom cabinet makers often will make custom fittings and accessories in their shops. This can be a good alternative to ensure proper fitting and increase the customization of your cabinets.

Mounted drawer box guides allow for the full extension of the drawer with a soft closing mechanism allowing the drawer to gently glide and close. Custom cabinet makers often include drawer box guides or feature them as an upgradable option.
